Mom, Can You Hear The Flowers Blooming?

Grief inhabits the land and bodies of Vietnam; it scars, burns, and kills. Mom, Can You Hear The Flowers Blooming? honors the life my mom has lived, while simultaneously examining the structures of grief created by war. Through gestures of collage and image transfer, the work imagines an alternative landscape where my mom and I are liberated from these tragedies. Within this re-imagined land, our Vietnamese bodies and histories are reclaimed; our lives are protected from the violence of the white gaze. Mom Can You Hear The Flowers Blooming?, honors alternate ways of knowing and remembering - ways not physically tangible, but which preserves our concealed Vietnamese histories.
